IDEXX CBC
Gain valuable insights into the current condition of your patients
The IDEXX CBC enables veterinarians to provide the highest standard of care to patients through the routine inclusion of an absolute Reticulocyte count and Reticulocyte-Haemoglobin for all feline and canine complete blood counts (CBCs).
Flexible options allow you to choose the CBC most appropriate for your patients' needs.
Diagnostic flexibility for your patients' needs
Test codes, names, and contents
The Standard IDEXX CBC is the appropriate and most cost-effective option for routine preanaesthetic or preventive care screenings on clinically healthy animals. Available for canine and feline, this option provides an automated CBC, including haemogram, five-part differential, platelets, platelet indices, as well as reticulocyte count and reticulocyte haemoglobin.
A blood film review is automatically included when results are markedly abnormal.
The Comprehensive IDEXX CBC is inclusive of an automated CBC, including haemogram, five-part differential, platelets, platelet indices, as well as absolute reticulocyte count and reticulocyte haemoglobin. A blood film review is automatically performed when results are markedly abnormal based on established guidelines (see protocol information in the Online Test Directory at vetconnectplus.co.nz).
In addition to the Standard, the Comprehensive IDEXX CBC provides an IDEXX pathologist interpretation to evaluate the significance of the blood film findings.
Blood Film Review
A blood film review is performed by a technician for platelet, RBC and WBC morphology and parasite screen. A blood film review is automatically performed when results are markedly abnormal based on established guidelines or if unclassified cells are seen based on specific established criteria (see protocol information in the Online Test Directory at vetconnectplus.co.nz).
Pathologist Interpretation
When requested, an interpretation is completed by an IDEXX Pathologist which is available through VetConnect PLUS. Add a Pathologist interpretation to an Standard IDEXX CBC using code IIC.
Note: Upgrading from a Standard IDEXX CBC previously performed at IDEXX Reference Laboratories or on an in-house IDEXX haematology analyser (ProCyte Dx or LaserCyte Dx). Must be ordered within 72 hours of initial CBC.
Why reticulocyte parameters are important
Reticulocytes act as an early warning system that detect a variety of issues early
Newly released reticulocytes reflect the current condition of an animal, making them excellent early indicators of conditions such as blood loss and inflammation before development of anaemia. Early detection provides the best chance of determining and treating the underlying cause sooner resulting in better long-term patient outcomes.

*If automated results fall outside of established guidelines and the specimen is considered significantly abnormal, a blood film evaluation by a technician is performed.
†For canine and feline patients, reticulocyte concentration (RETICs) and reticulocyte haemoglobin (RETIC-HGB) parameters are included on all CBC reports provided by IDEXX Reference Laboratories and the ProCyte Dx Haematology Analyser.
